PMDF Training by Arnold Consulting, Inc.

The PMDF Configuration and Management course has been given publicly and to Arnold Consulting, Inc., Innosoft, and Process Software clients since 1992. It typically follows a consulting engagement, during which a PMDF-based mail system is configured. Handouts are based on the client's own PMDF configuration files. If no consulting is involved, a half-day of on-site consulting is required to upgrade and tune up the local PMDF configuration, and to develop handouts. The attendees also receive copies of the overhead slides.

The course was last offered publicly at the Compaq Enterprise Technical Symposium, in Anaheim, California, on 8-9-Sep-2001. The public course uses the configuration files of Encompasserve, the on-line conferencing system for Compaq users, rather than your own configuration. If you are interested in future public course dates, please send mail to be added to a special mailing list for training announcements.

The course is targeted at system managers, postmasters, and their understudies. Attendees should have system privileges and some OpenVMS, UNIX, or Window NT or 2000 system management experience. We strongly recommend that at least two users with full management privileges take the course at each of our client sites.

We cover the OSI networking model and the IFIP messaging model to set a common terminology base, then PMDF architecture and principles of operation. Then we work through all of the client's PMDF configuration files, describing address rewriting and message flow. Finally, we cover PMDF management, including logging, message tracing, and storage management.

In 1995, Arnold Consulting, Inc. introduced a two-day version of the course, which is recommended over the one-day version for all clients. The two-day version adds additional material on POP and IMAP clients, Transport Layer Security, fighting junk email, and monitoring PMDF systems. On-site versions of the course emphasize the OpenVMS, Solaris, Tru64 UNIX, or Windows platforms, as appropriate. The public version covers all platforms.

The course format is interactive lecture. We require an overhead projector and a flip chart with markers. (A white board works, too, but doesn't leave a record of our discussion for future study.) We generally meet 8:30-noon and 1:30-5 with two 15 minute breaks, but the schedule can be tailored to your needs.

On-site PMDF training is at our consulting rate and under our standard terms and conditions. Please contact us for a quotation for your specific situation. We'll need to know:
